A Summer of Exploration in Hong Kong
My name is Alexander, and I spent this past summer on exchange at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, studying ‘Introduction to Space Exploration.’ It was a valuable experience that gave me great memories and a new perspective.
The chance to explore Hong Kong was a major highlight. What made it so engaging was the group of other exchange students. There was always a shared curiosity between us all to venture out, which we did most days. We hiked to the Tian Tan Buddha, visited the Lady’s Market, explored Central. All amazing experiences.
Some of my best moments happened in the Hong Hom halls (Coolest university accommodation ever!). A common activity was playing Mahjong late at night with other exchange students. While we played, we talked about our home countries and cultures. It was a great way to learn a lot about each other.
One specific memory was when a large group of us, all study abroad students, went out for authentic Hong Kong food. It was amazing to experience the local cuisine together. Sharing those dishes as a group made the whole experience fun and memorable.
This experience has been useful in several ways. Academically, the course gave me knowledge I’m now using in an aerospace competition with Airbus. Culturally, it helped me understand a different way of life, which helped me a lot through my further travels, which I did around mainland China. I also made strong friendships; one friend from Italy is visiting me this Christmas, and I plan to see another in China next summer.
Based on my experiences abroad, the best piece of advice I can give to you is to enjoy it! Take every opportunity you get and explore all the places that you’re interested in visiting!
