I fell in love with Strasbourg

Written by Aled

Elegant vineyard hills, lively Christmas markets and eye-catching landmarks! Here are just some of the incredible things that I experienced on my year abroad in Strasbourg, France.

Situated on the eastern border of France and known as “Le Capital de Noël” (The Christmas Capital), Strasbourg has picturesque architecture all along its canal banks, and is surrounded by vast forests and mountains. As a historic city with majestic landmarks such as the incredible cathedral, the monumental European Parliament, and a blend of both French and German influences in the city’s culture, food and architecture, I immediately fell in love with Strasbourg!

The business school, “EM Strasbourg” is an energetic hotspot to meet like-minded friendly French and international students, and study engaging courses.

The university offers plenty of events throughout the year to meet other international students, where I built a network of friends spanning from across the globe!

The teaching culture varies from the UK, with an emphasis on groupwork, 3-hour long lectures and exciting courses that you simply won’t find in the UK. An example and a personal highlight of mine, was taking a “Global Wine Business” class which focused on French wine market trends, which also included a daytrip to a local vineyard to try Alsace wines! Alongside my business classes, I was also offered French language classes to enhance language skills, which helped my fluency enormously.

With thanks to Strasbourg’s ideal location, travelling across Europe is possible and destinations are easily accessible at a relatively low price. I had the opportunity to travel to places such as Paris, Switzerland and Stuttgart for the Oktoberfest beer festival. I also visited destinations further afield like the Czech Republic, Sweden and Belgium, to name a few. Exploring Europe with friends from across the globe was an experience I’ll never forget and something that was only possible thanks to my year abroad.

Studying abroad in Strasbourg benefited and developed my character greatly by enhancing my self-confidence and independence skills, improved my employability through global exposure, and provided me with unforgettable memories and friends for life!
