CSU – Try something new

Written by Michaela

I studied abroad in the United States, at Colorado State University.  Throughout my year I took every opportunity I was given to ensure I was able to make the most out of the year! Having visited the USA before I was pleased to be able to apply to study in a partly familiar country with so much to explore.

First off to mention is the Colorado State University campus. Undoubtedly, there is a feeling of warmth and community. As a study abroad student, I experienced my class peers being welcoming and there being an overwhelming feeling of “school spirit” being felt from students. From our first day, the international office worked to integrate us into campus life and create a community for study abroad students.

As a state, Colorado people are beyond friendly, which is accompanied by the endless mountain views and outdoor recreation. The year round sunshine and winter snow, meant I was able to visit the near by national parks for hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing. This is something I was extremely grateful for whilst I was there, and something I miss greatly since returning.

Being a recipient of the Turing Scheme, I was able to live and explore the USA, enriching my study abroad experience. Despite the country being so vast, I took the opportunity to travel far and see as much as possible. The additional funds enabled me to live and see places I had never been to in the USA.

Overall, I feel the decision to take part in a study abroad year was the best decision for me and undoubtedly one I would choose to make again. It was a chance to push me out of my comfort zone into something few people at the University of Reading get to experience. With the support of the universities and the funding from the Turing Scheme, I was able to try new things, develop my character, and create life long friendships and memories.
