A semester in Cyprus

I studied Fine Art at the University of Nicosia (UNIC) in Cyprus and it was honestly a life-changing experience. It was my first time visiting Cyprus and I was amazed by the perfect weather, range of delicious food choices and sandy beaches only an hour away from the city. Cyprus has such a rich history, I felt honoured to have experienced the divided city first-hand.

The University of Nicosia has such modern architecture with a lot of picturesque spots! I thoroughly enjoyed the teaching style which was more skills-focused. It was my first time doing life drawing and screen printing, they had great resources and the teachers were extremely supportive! Regarding any anxieties I had whilst being abroad the study abroad office at UNIC was extremely helpful in easing this.

My favourite thing that I did while studying abroad was celebrating easter with one of my Cypriots friend’s family, we got to eat together, play tsougrisma (a traditional egg cracking game) and watch Lambratzia (a bonfire to symbolise the burning of Judas). It felt great to immerse myself in Cypriot culture!

A moment I was proudest of was travelling to a beach called Fig Tree Bay alone! I was really happy to have felt comfortable enough to navigate solo and use my limited Greek to ask questions to ensure I was going the right way. I also learnt to swim in Cyprus, my friends were very supportive, and I managed to
swim to the little island off the shore of Fig Tree Bay!

Studying abroad has greatly increased my confidence, I have become a more effective communicator and found myself feeling more open to entering novel situations. I’ve expanded my personal and professional network, connecting with international artists and friends. Being a recipient of funding really helped
me experience the country fully, not as a tourist but as a native. It was a phenomenal experience that has truly been the highlight of my degree.
