A semester at UMW with travel

Written by Milly

It was so interesting and such a great experience to study at a university in a different country, particularly the USA as their university system and culture generally is much more different to ours than you would expect. I think what I enjoyed most about where I was (The University of Mary Washington) was the proximity and easy transport links to notable American cities such as Washington D.C. and New York, and it was so exciting to get the travel around that part of the US and various different cities and smaller towns that were close by. As a result of this experience I think I am much more independent (even though I was quite independent before!) and confident within myself, and I have made so many new friends from around the world (and from Reading!) who I still speak to now and who I will hopefully meet up with in the future.

Being able to get Turing Scheme funding made a massive difference as well as studying abroad can be expensive and the funding helped cover day-to-day expenses whilst I was out there, which meant that I could do things like travel in and around the area – including a stay in New York and Philadelphia.

I would definitely recommend applying to study abroad (and applying for Turing Scheme funding). This was one of the best things I have ever done and I’ll remember this experience for the rest of my life!
