Changes: 2024/25 onwards

As part of a strategic review of the University’s academic provision, the University is making changes to its programmes and to the structure of its academic year from 2024/25 onwards. These changes are designed to improve student experience and are informed by student feedback. Full details of the changes are expected later in 2023 (or early 2024). But for Study Abroad Programme students these changes will include:

• A move from three terms to two semesters, replacing the current two unequal Study Block system
• Short assessment periods at the end of each semester, replacing the current sole Summer term exam period
• Changes to modules offered
• Reviewing assessment practices
• Including innovative uses of technology to enhance teaching and learning

Students and partner institution colleagues should be aware that:

• The Semester one September entry point will remain the same
• The Semester two entry point will move to early February from the current early January start. Please see anticipated dates in the table below 
• Dedicated welcome programmes be delivered to students for both entry points
• Students will still be able to gain the equivalent of 30 ECTS of credits per semester, but many modules will now revert to 10 ECTS
• The current practice of alternative assessments to replace examinations will continue for semester one students (previous Study Block 1) who cannot remain in Reading in January because they need to return to their home institutions to continue their degree studies
