An Experience of a Lifetime

Written by Hilary Eddy

What a semester! When applying to partake in the Study Abroad Programme with the University of Reading, I had no idea just how amazing the experience would turn out to be. Pair easy weekend travel to all the top UK sites with international friendships that will last a lifetime, an awesome campus culture and the fabulous Erasmus & Study Abroad Office team, and Reading really has it all!

Whether you’re a history hunter, chasing a culture shock or a foodie (Sunday roasts and a beer at the local were as close as I came) the convenience of the train line and 30% off rail card made exploring the wonders of the UK a breeze. The 20 min train ride into London also made for some great day trips plus easy access to Europe (because what Aussie doesn’t want to be able to say they just casually went to Paris for the weekend). The organised study abroad trips also provided amazing outings to three gorgeous English locations.

The atmosphere on campus really made it feel like a home away from home. Everyone easily forged great new friendships, whether with fellow study abroad students, flat mates, classmates or other members of one of the many university societies. This really enhanced the inclusive culture and meant weekends were always filled, for a good time with great friends.

To top it off, the University also had a great learning environment. All the teaching staff and conveners were extremely friendly, helpful and approachable and the Erasmus & Study Abroad Office team really went above and beyond in provided amazing assistance in all steps, from module approvals to final mark and transcript release. All modules were extremely interesting, well run and well suited to a study abroad placement.   Whether you’re looking for an excuse to move to the UK for a semester, explore the other side of the globe or just want a change of scenery, I highly recommend the Study Abroad Programme with the University of Reading. It really was the opportunity of a lifetime and one which I’ll never forget.
